The Horai were the goddesses of seasons and natural portions of time.

Chose to portray them as triplets this time. Of course, It would be fun to depict them as more "elemental", but I went with simple human designs for this. I plan to have them printed on my new thank-you cards soon. ✨

Marbled Monday

This sunny Marbled Monday, as we here in Wisconsin wait for the weather to catch up to the seasons and feel spring-like, I’ve selected The Seasons by Scottish poet and playwright James Thomson (1700-1748). There have been many editions of The Seasons since its first publication as a complete series of four poems in 1730—this one was published by The Nonesuch Press in 1927. It features five illustrations by an artist simply identified as Jacquier, who I have been unable to otherwise identify. The images are copperplate engravings made by C. Sigrist that were hand colored using watercolor through stencils at The Curwen Press. 

The marbling is a very curly French curl or snail pattern, featuring red, blue, orange, cream, and a greenish-grey. This pattern is created by first dropping colors in to the water bath and then taking a comb with regularly spaced teeth and swirling it in the water bath to make the snail pattern.

Crafting a take that Tumblr users' disdain for warm weather and love of fall and winter is a symptom of our disconnect from the body, the land, the rhythms of natural life, and so on. Our ancestors understood that the sun would always rise again, that kings would always come and go, and that winter sucks ass. All their folklore worth a damn, all their songs and festivals, knew this.

Liquid modernity, Capitalism, Whiteness, Faustian civilisation, central heating, whatever, has made us forget, made us a retiring, neurotic people in love with age, death, and shivering. The winter has taken root in us, frost rime in the drupelets of the lungs, ice clotting the chambers of the heart, and we think Halloween is better than Easter and pretend to be excited to wear sweaters.

Autumn is represented as a playful figure wearing copper leaves in her long flowing hair. She offers the viewer armfuls of harvest fruits including grapes, while the golden frame is decorated with an abundant grapevine.
